The children were all part of the innovative MITI (Musical Instrument Teaching Initiative) Scheme, operated by our Trust in conjunction with the Norfolk Music Hub, and it enables more than 200 primary school pupils across the region to learn an instrument.

The WNAT Instrumentalist Workshop brought the youngsters together to form a wind band and a string orchestra, under the tutelage of Robin Norman, Director of Music at the Trust, Robert Galliard, Director of Primary Music, and a team of instrumental tutors from across the Trust.

The musicians, playing in larger groups for the first time, rehearsed pieces they had been studying in school, before performing together on stage in front of an audience.

“After two hours of sectional rehearsals, where the different families are separated to work intensively, the two larger ensembles were brought back together to rehearse as bigger groups,” explained Mr Norman. 

“They then moved to the professional stage on the field at Springwood, and gave a wondrous concert of what they had been learning for a large and appreciative audience of family and friends.”

He continued: “These workshops take place three times annually, and it was an absolute joy to see the children improve through the year, and also their enjoyment and energy in not only performing, but also in just playing with other people, making new friends, and loving making music – an enjoyment they will take with them through life.”
